Day 0 is set aside for traveling. Take a deep breath… you’re finally on your way to a magical destination! Experience wild animals surviving on the open savannas, mountains, lakes and jungles. Marvel at the exotic and beautiful scenery that only Africa can offer. You’re about to embark on a real-life African adventure filled with unforgettable moments and lifelong memories!
Day 1 is your arrival day. Karibu Tanzania! (Welcome to Tanzania!)
Once you’ve landed in the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Samuel (O.D.) and I (Shelly) will greet you at the airport in person. O.D. will be in full traditional Maasai attire (as shown in the picture below), and I will likely be the only blonde in the arrivals area. We’ll both be wearing Maasai shukas, the wrap I have on in the photo below.
This is the day we’ll be receiving our guests from all over the world. If your flight arrives earlier in the day, we can do a little exploring and give you your first taste of Tanzania. If you arrive in the evening, or are feeling the effects of travel, we’ll head straight to your hotel where you can unwind and rest in preparation for the adventures ahead.
- See Mt. Kilimanjaro
- Drive to Arusha National Park
- Explore Arusha National Park
- Your hotel room has a view of Mt. Meru
After breakfast we’ll drive to the view spot to see the tallest Mountain in all of Africa (not just in Tanzania). Standing at 19,341 ft (5,895 m), Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest LONE MOUNTAIN in the world (though no dwarves or dragons has been sighted there as far as we know). After some amazing photos and views, we’ll drive the 1.5 hours to Arusha National Park where we’ll have our first official Safari.
Arusha National Park is located on the foothills of Mount Meru making it a treasure of wildlife and changing scenery. We’ll first start in a deep jungle which is home to blue monkeys, colorful turacos, trogons, and the white & black colobus monkeys. In the north the scenery changes to rolling hills and the tranquil Momela lake. Bright pink flamingos migrate here and there are usually herds of zebra and giraffes nearby. Though this is particular park does not have elephants and lions, the scenery and the many animals is does have makes it a must for photographers and nature lovers alike.
- Arusha Day Tour
- Make your own Coffee
- Visit a local village
- Taste rare Honey and exotic spices
Today is our culture day. We’ll visit a village at the foot of Mt. Meru, brew our own coffee, and taste some rare honey and exotic spices. Here’s an excerpt from the local company we’ll be doing this outing with.
“Engage in a captivating village tour in the heart of Mount Meru, where every step unveils the tapestry of daily life in this ancient mountain community. Wander through lush food forest farms where vibrant crops thrive against the backdrop of the towering peaks. We will show you sustainable initiatives that shape the village’s future, as you visit a pioneering biogas facility. Continue the journey as you explore the production process of one of the world’s rarest honey. This immersive journey promises an intimate connection with the rhythm of village life on Mount Meru, weaving together nature, community, and sustainability.
Discover the ancient art of coffee production along the slopes of Mount Meru. In this bean-to-cup experience, you will make your own traditional cup of coffee… from picking coffee beans off the tree to brewing it over a fire. Take home a sample for friends and family to enjoy. Our exclusive coffee tour is a journey like no other.
Indulge in a unique spice and honey-tasting experience. Savor the rich, exotic flavors of locally sourced spiced beverages and the distinctive floral sweetness of rare, medicinal honey harvested from the heart of the mountain. This delightful journey tantalizes your taste buds and offers a deep connection to the region’s natural bounty. It also serves as an excellent pairing to the region’s famed banana wine. Then, enjoy a delectable traditional lunch buffet.
Embark on an enchanting journey to a breathtaking waterfall nestled on the majestic Mount Meru. The tour invites you to immerse yourself in this hidden oasis, offering the rare opportunity to swim in the healing pools at its base. Whether you’re seeking a serene escape or an adventurous exploration, this tour promises a magical encounter.”
- Take a stroll with Giraffes
- Drive to Tarangire National Park
- Wander in Tarangire National Park
- Go on a Night Safari
After breakfast, we’re going to take a stroll with some giraffes. This 90 min experience will be an educational journey as well as a wonderful experience watching these majestic animals thriving in their natural habitat. We’ll then drive the 2.5 drive to Tarangire National Park where majestic baobab trees and the unique tree-climbing lions call home. We’ll explore the park while there’s still daylight left, then at night, we’ll head out for a 3 hour Night Safari where you’ll be able to see the animals that ONLY come out at night – aardvarks, badgers, civets, etc.
- Adventure through Lake Manyara
- Treetop Walkways
Lake Manyara National Park is only about an hour away from Tarangire. It’s a smaller and a lesser-known game reserve, making it more of a diamond in the rough. Lake Manyara has a high concentration of elephants – some of the largest herds anywhere on earth! And because it’s so close to Tarangire, the rare tree-climbing lions also live in this area giving us an extra chance to see this rare site.
The lake itself is truly something to behold, with the 600 m-high Rift Valley escarpment plunging down to meet its western shore. The lake is also home to over 400+ species of birds including flamingoes, pelicans, and other waterbirds. Fifty of these 400+ are birds of prey, including various types of eagles. One of the reasons for the richness of birdlife is the diversity of habitats within the park: there’s forest, woodland, grassland, marshland and the lake.
One of my favorite things about this park is the Treetop canopy walk. We’ll walk among the treetops and experience untouched nature and wildlife from a unique perspective. This 2,113 foot (370m) experience starts on the ground and gradually rises. For almost an hour you’ll walk on a series of suspension bridges that reaches a height of 60 ft (18m). Each of the bridges end on a viewing deck situated around tree trunks. These treetop platforms are perfect places to stop and enjoy life in the canopy amongst butterflies, monkeys and birds .
- Adventure in the Ngorongoro Crater
- Hotel is a Luxury hotel overlooking the Crater
Today we’re going to venture into the legendary UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Crater. Named by Maasai farmers after the sound of the cow bells when herding cattle across the plains, ngoro ngoro, Here, you’ll find yourself inside an ancient volcanic caldera, surrounded by 2,000-foot (600-meter) cliffs. At 102 sq miles (10×12) (264 sq km), it is the largest intact caldera in the world that isn’t full of water. The walls are so high they have essentially cut off the inside from the rest of the world allowing the creation of its own biodiversity inside.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also home to some of the densest mammal populations on earth. Parts of the crater are covered in dense forest while most of the northern end is grassy plains – this is where the animals converge in great numbers. The crater is home to herds of zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, and lions. Its also one of the last places in the world you can see the critically endangered black rhino in the wild, as there are approximately 60 living here. You’ll be immersed into a world where both you and the wildlife are within the vast, breathtaking embrace of this natural wonder.
This night we’ll be staying in an exclusive hotel that overlooks this breathtaking marvel.
- Olduwai Gorge
- “Cradle of Mankind”
- Drive to Serengeti
Today we’re going to drive to the world famous plains of the Serengeti. Along the way we’ll stop for a view of the Olduvai Gorge. Known as “The Cradle of Mankind”, it is one of the most important paleoanthroplogolical sites in all the world. Here were found the world’s oldest undisputed Homo Sapien bones and tools from 1.7 million years ago.
Our next stop is the Legendary Serengeti! The most famous Savanna on the planet. The Serengeti is home to the world renowned Great Migration. Every year 1.5+ million wildebeest and 200k zebra follow the rains and grasses making the 5,000 mile (8,047 km) loop from the S. Serengeti, into the Maasai Mara in Kenya, and back down to the bottom of the Serengeti to calve.
Then Serengti is truly legendary in its resident wildlife – including the African Big 5. It is home to buffaloes, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards, lions, cheetah, hyenas, topi, gazelle, waterbuck, hartebeest, etc. The park is also home to more than 500 species of birds, including ostriches, crowned cranes, marabou storks and secretary birds; some of the most sought-after and photogenic birds on the planet.
- SAFARI Serengeti National Park (2 Days)
- Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti (included but optional)
- 3 nights Luxury Hotel overlooking the Serengeti
We’re now in the world of The Lion King and the Great Migration wildebeest crossings featured on National Geographic. Over the next two days, we’ll be immersed in the untamed beauty of this iconic landscape. It’s a haven for wildlife, offering opportunities to observe nature at its most authentic.
Each day, we’ll set out in search of the Big 5 and watch the diverse array of animals along the way. Keep your camera ready as we search the savannah for lions, leopards, and cheetahs. We’ll marvel at towering giraffes grazing the treetops and magnificent elephants roaming the plains. We’ll see the hippos and crocodiles laze about in the rivers. And, we’ll add zebras, baboons, mongooses, hyenas, and a myriad of other amazing creatures to our scouting list.
During the day we’ll take a break under the shade of an iconic African Acacia tree and have a snack. Here, you’ll breathe in the beauty that surrounds us. Relaxing in the wild is an incredible experience, allowing you to reflect on the sights and sounds of the Mara. The sunsets here are some of the most breathtaking you will ever see, painting the sky with enchanting hues of orange, pink, and purple. This savanna is truly one of my favorite places in the world.
Our safaris are not just about spotting wildlife; they’re about experiencing the heartbeat of Africa. It’s about connecting with the wild, feeling the pulse of the earth, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Every moment is filled with wonder!
**This Luxury Tour includes one evening dinner in the Bush surrounded by nature and one early morning Hot Air Balloon Ride over the Maasai Mara with a champagne breakfast.
**The Hot Air Balloon departs before dawn since the temperature plays a huge role in how long the balloon can stay in the air. You’ll soar over the savanna for an hour watching the animals from a view you can only get from above. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy a scrumptious champagne breakfast out on the savanna.
