Marvel at the exotic and beautiful scenery that only Africa can offer. You’re about to embark on a real-life African adventure filled with unforgettable moments and lifelong memories!
Day 1 is your arrival day. Karibu Tanzania! (Welcome to Tanzania!)
Once you’ve landed in the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Samuel (O.D.) and I (Shelly) will greet you at the airport in person. O.D. will be in full traditional Maasai attire (as shown in the picture below), and I will likely be the only blonde in the arrivals area. We’ll both be wearing Maasai shukas, the wrap I have on in the photo below.
This is the day we’ll be receiving our guests from all over the world. If your flight arrives earlier in the day, we can do a little exploring and give you your first taste of Tanzania. If you arrive in the evening, or are feeling the effects of travel, we’ll head straight to your hotel where you can unwind and rest in preparation for the adventures ahead.
- See Mt. Kilimanjaro
- Explore Arusha National Park
- (Luxury tour hotel room has a view of Mt. Meru)
After breakfast we’ll drive to the view spot to see the tallest Mountain in all of Africa. Standing at 19,341 ft (5,895 m), Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest LONE MOUNTAIN in the world (not in a chain). I often joke that we haven’t seen any dwarves or dragons here yet though 😉 After some amazing photos and views, we’ll drive to Arusha National Park (over an hour away) where we’ll have our first official Safari.
Arusha National Park is located on the foothills of Mount Meru making it a treasure of wildlife and changing scenery. First we’ll be in a deep jungle home to blue monkeys, colorful turacos, trogons, and the white & black colobus monkeys. In the north the scenery changes to rolling hills and the tranquil Momela lake. Bright pink flamingos migrate here and there are usually herds of zebra and giraffes nearby. Though this is particular park does not have elephants and lions, the scenery and the many other animals make it a must!
We’ll spend a few hours exploring around then go back to our hotels for some much needed rest and relaxation.
(During Safaris, we usually have a morning drive, come back for some lunch, relax a little bit, then go on an afternoon drive. You’re welcome to join us for both drives, one or the other, or none for that day. If we’re going to see a potential river crossing, we will pack a lunch and head out for an all day adventure, but we will check in and see how everyone is feeling first and during. We understand exploration and the need for relaxation has a balance and it changes on an individual, day-to-day basis. This tour is meant for you to enjoy yourself on whatever level you chose to participate. We know some people love to go-go-go and some people don’t. So, we try to have options available for both ends.)
- Arusha Day Tour
- Make your own Coffee
- Visit a local village
- Taste rare Honey and exotic spices
- Humanitarian Gift
Today is our culture day. We’ll go at a leisurely pace as we visit a village at the foot of Mt. Meru, make our own coffee from bean-to-cup experience, and taste some exotic spices and rare medicinal honey from the local bees. For one day you’ll be immersed into what life is like in another part of the world.
This is also where we’ll be giving our humanitarian gift. We will come with some basic supplies (already included) to gift to some school children or the local orphanage.
- Stroll with Giraffes
- Drive to Lake Manyara
- Treetop Walkways
- Safari around Lake Manyara
Afterwards we’ll drive a couple hours to a smaller and a lesser-known game reserve called Lake Manyara National Park. It’s more of a diamond in the rough. Lake Manyara has a high concentration of elephants – some of the largest herds anywhere on earth! And because it’s so close to Tarangire, the rare tree-climbing lions are also in this area giving us an extra chance to see this rare site.
One of my favorite things about this park is the Treetop canopy walk. We’ll walk among the treetops and experience untouched nature and wildlife from a unique perspective. This 2,113 foot (370m) experience starts on the ground and gradually rises. For almost an hour you’ll walk on a series of suspension bridges that reaches a height of 60 ft (18m). Each of the bridges end on a viewing deck situated around tree trunks. These treetop platforms are perfect places to stop and enjoy life in the canopy amongst butterflies, monkeys and birds .
The lake itself is truly something to behold, with the 600 m-high Rift Valley escarpment plunging down to meet its western shore. The lake is also home to over 400+ species of birds including flamingoes, pelicans, and other waterbirds. Fifty of these 400+ are birds of prey, including various types of eagles. One of the reasons for the richness of birdlife is the diversity of habitats within the park: there’s forest, woodland, grassland, marshland and the lake.
- Two days in Tarangire National Park
- Go on a Night Safari
One on of the evenings we’re here, after dinner we’ll head out on a Night Safari where you’ll be able to see the animals that ONLY come out at night – aardvarks, badgers, civets, etc. Plus the animals that are less elusive during the nighttime hours, like rhinos. This is not usually available and this is one of the most perfect parks for this because of all the wildlife concentrated here and the lake. (Please make sure you bring a jack or packable down and a warm hat. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, it can get cold and night and we’ll be in an open vehicle during this safari).
- Adventure in the Ngorongoro Crater
- (Luxury tour will stay at Melia Ngorongoro Luxury high on the rim overlooking the Crater)
Today we’re going to venture into the legendary UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Crater. Named by Maasai farmers after the sound of the cow bells when herding cattle across the plains, ngoro ngoro, Here, you’ll find yourself inside an ancient volcanic caldera, surrounded by 2,000-foot (600-meter) cliffs. At 102 sq miles (10×12) (264 sq km), it is the largest intact caldera in the world that isn’t full of water. The walls are so high they have essentially cut off the inside from the rest of the world allowing the creation of its own biodiversity inside.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also home to some of the densest mammal populations on earth. Parts of the crater are covered in dense forest while most of the northern end is grassy plains – this is where the animals converge in great numbers. The crater is home to herds of zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, and lions. Its also one of the last places in the world you can see the critically endangered black rhino in the wild, as there are approximately 60 living here. You’ll be immersed into a world where both you and the wildlife are within the vast, breathtaking embrace of this natural wonder.
- Olduwai Gorge
- “Cradle of Mankind”
- Drive to Serengeti
In the morning, we’ll relax until checkout.
After check-out we’ll drive into the world famous plains of the Serengeti. Along the way we’ll stop for a view of the Olduvai Gorge. Known as “The Cradle of Mankind”, it is one of the most important paleoanthroplogolical sites in all the world. Here were found the world’s oldest undisputed Homo Sapien bones and tools from 1.7 million years ago. (We will not be doing the hike to the actual site itself since it’s long and steep, but we will stop at the viewpoint).
We will then drive into the Serengeti. The Serengeti is world renowned for the BIG 5 and for the Great Migration. Every year 1.5+ million wildebeest and 200k zebra follow the rains and grasses making the 5,000 mile (8,047 km) loop from the S. Serengeti, into the Maasai Mara in Kenya, and back down to the South Serengeti where they calve.
The Serengeti is truly legendary. It is home to buffaloes, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards, lions, cheetah, hyenas, topi, gazelle, waterbuck, hartebeest, and so much more! The park is home and host to more than 500 species of birds, including ostriches, crowned cranes, marabou storks and secretary birds; some of the most sought-after and photogenic birds on the planet. We’ll be spending the evening here plus the next two days!
- SAFARI Serengeti National Park (2 Days)
- Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti (included but optional)
We’re now in the world of The Lion King and the Great Migration wildebeest crossings featured on National Geographic. Over the next two days, we’ll be immersed in the untamed beauty of this iconic landscape. It’s a haven for wildlife, offering opportunities to observe nature at its most authentic.
Each day, we’ll set out in search of the Big 5 and watch the diverse array of animals along the way. Keep your camera ready as we search the savannah for lions, leopards, and cheetahs. We’ll marvel at towering giraffes grazing the treetops and magnificent elephants roaming the plains. We’ll see the hippos and crocodiles laze about in the rivers. And, we’ll add zebras, baboons, mongooses, hyenas, and a myriad of other amazing creatures to our scouting list.
During the day we’ll take a break under the shade of an iconic African Acacia tree. Here, you’ll breathe in the beauty that surrounds us. Relaxing in the wild is an incredible experience, allowing you to reflect on the sights and sounds of the savanna. The sunsets here are some of the most breathtaking you will ever see, painting the sky with enchanting hues of orange, pink, and purple. This savanna is truly one of my favorite places in the world.
Our safaris are not just about spotting wildlife; they’re about experiencing the heartbeat of Africa. It’s about connecting with the wild, feeling the pulse of the earth, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Every moment is filled with wonder!
**This Luxury Tour includes: one evening dinner in the Bush here surrounded by nature and one early morning Hot Air Balloon Ride over the Maasai Mara with a champagne breakfast.
**The Hot Air Balloon (included but optional). It departs before dawn since the temperature plays a huge role in how long the balloon can stay in the air. You’ll soar over the savanna for an hour watching the animals from a view you can only get from above. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy a scrumptious champagne breakfast out on the savanna. If you prefer NOT to go, you can opt out and receive your money back.
- Fly back home
OR - Fly to Zanzibar for your island Add-on
- (Luxury tour will stay at 5 Star all-inclusive resort in Zanzibar)
Today we will all be flying out of the Serengeti. You will either be flying back home or continuing on with us for an all inclusive 4 night relaxation and ocean trip to Zanzibar island.
PLEASE NOTE: Large planes are NOT allowed into the Serengeti so all planes in and out are small. For those who do NOT want to fly on the small planes, there’s an option to drive back with a cruiser or we’ll hire a car. Please note it is a 6.5 hour drive back to Kilimanjaro International airport, so you’ll want to make sure you have a evening departure for a return flight.
Flying to Zanzibar: For those wanting some down time at the beach, we will be flying to Zanzibar straight from the Serengeti so we can spend the afternoon and evening in Zanzibar. Zanzibar is partially independent from Tanzania and requires a separate inbound travel insurance booked through their country. This insurance can only be obtained from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) and can be purchased when applying for your e-visa into Tanzania. We’ll arrive in the afternoon and the rest of the day is Free time.
Small Plane Limitations: Because the planes are small, they will have a luggage weight limit and a bag limit when flying – so when you’re at home packing for this trip, keep this in mind! We’ll give you the exact info with your welcome packet.

This is the info from their site: “Discover the enchanting world of sea turtles at the Swim with Turtles Sanctuary in Zanzibar. Just like us, many animals thrive on touch, cuddles, and interaction. The welfare of the animals on Cheetah’s Rock is paramount! Feel the fur of a cheetah, the breath of lions, feed lemurs, zebras and more!
